Eckington Parks & Arts
Formed in 2019 and formalized in January 2020, Eckington Parks & Arts (EP&A) is an action-oriented nonprofit philanthropic group that supports and activates Eckington’s public spaces. The group is composed of members who contribute either time or resources to beautifying and maintaining public spaces in Eckington. The group is independent from but built to coordinate with the Eckington Civic Association (ECA).
History
EP&A began in a series of community meetings in Spring and Summer 2019. From those initial meetings with dozens of Eckington residents, the mission, functions, and purpose of the organization were born.
In January 2020, the Friends of the Eckington Parks & Arts voted the initial leaders of EP&A into their positions. The Board meets at least four times per year to plan events, fundraise, and discuss improvements to Eckington green spaces. The organization holds quarterly meetings open to all Friends and neighbors.
Alethia Tanner Park
EP&A’s initial charge is to support Alethia Tanner Park (227 Harry Thomas Way NE) and its adjacent dog park, both of which are scheduled to open in Spring 2020.
Harry Thomas Recreation Center
Harry Thomas Recreation Center (1743 Lincoln Road NE) and its green space also falls under EP&A’s purview.
